Since 2004 Ilulissat Ice Fjord has been included on UNESCO's World Heritage list.
UNESCO is a UN institution which, among other things, aims to preserve the places in the world estimated to be of a unique cultural or natural character.
Glaciological phenomenon
The Ilulissat Icefjord was included on the World Heritage because it is a unique glaciological phenomenon and because of its beauty.
Approximately 55 km from the mouth of the icefjord is the Ilulissat Glacier, which is the most active glacier in the northern hemisphere and every year produces about 46 cubic kilometers of ice into the icefjord.
The largest icebergs strand at the mouth of the fjord at a threshold and you can enjoy the sight of these from most places in Ilulissat.
Ilulissat Icefjord Office
After Ilulissat Ice Fjord was included on UNESCO's World Heritage Site-list Qaasuitsup Municipality created a office to manage the site. The Ilulissat Icefjord Office is housed in the town hall in Ilulissat.
The office oversees the management of the icefjord and and the surrounding area.
