Uummannaq

Uummannaq is located on a 12 square kilometer large island at the foot of the large heart-shaped mountain that reaches 1,175 meters to the sky. The mountain dominates the town and gave name to both the city as well as the local area.

Uummananq was founded in 1763.

The main trade is fishing, particularly of halibut. The fish are processed in a modern factory in the city and in the small villages.

The city's population is approximately 1300. Uummannaq has seven villages; Ikarasak (235 inhabitants), Saattut (217) Ukkusissat (172) Illorsuit (92) Nuugaatsiaq (86) Niaqornat (57) and Qaarsut with about 195 inhabitants. There are about 2,350 inhabitants in total in the Uummannaq area.

A landmark of the city is Uummannaq church, built in 1935 of granite that is carved on the spot. The church is Greenland's only major stone church in use.

There are three grocery stores, a furniture shop, a cafeteria, a snack bar, tavern, a hotel and "Brædtet" (where you buy fish and traditional Greenlandic food) in Uummannaq. There are several contractors in town, electricians and auto repair shops.


The city has a sports hall where you can practice indoor football, handball and badminton and other indoor sports. There is also an opportunity exercise in the fitness-center.
